How to Find the Main Idea in Reading Passages (Complete Guide + Practice Questions)

If you're preparing for the Praxis Core Reading (5713) exam, mastering the main idea is one of the most important skills. Many Reading questions ask you to identify the author's central point rather than focus on small details.

In this lesson, you'll learn what the main idea is, how to find it quickly, common mistakes to avoid, and practice with exam-style questions.



What Is the Main Idea?

The main idea is the central message or the most important point of a passage. Every sentence in the passage supports this central idea.

Ask yourself:

"What is this passage mostly about?"

If an answer only describes one detail, it is probably not the main idea.

4 Easy Steps to Find the Main Idea

Step 1: Read the Entire Passage

Don't stop after the first sentence. Read the whole passage before deciding.

Step 2: Look for Repeated Ideas

Notice words or concepts that appear several times.

Step 3: Ignore Minor Details

Examples, dates, and statistics support the main idea but are not the main idea.

Step 4: Choose the Best Summary

The correct answer explains the entire passage in one sentence.

Common Mistakes
