Author's Purpose in 5 Minutes! 📚 | Persuade, Inform & Entertain (PIE Method) | Praxis Core Reading 5713
Preparing for the Praxis Core Reading exam requires more than simply understanding the words on the page. Many questions ask you to make inferences and draw conclusions based on evidence that is implied rather than directly stated.
If you can recognize clues, connect ideas, and think logically, you'll answer these questions with greater confidence.
What Is an Inference?
An inference is a conclusion you reach using clues from the passage together with logical reasoning.
The author doesn't always tell you everything directly. Instead, you combine the evidence in the text with what the passage suggests.
Example:
James grabbed an umbrella before leaving the house. Dark clouds covered the sky, and the wind became stronger.
Inference:
It is probably going to rain.
The passage never says, "It will rain," but the clues clearly suggest it.
What Does It Mean to Draw a Conclusion?
Drawing a conclusion means using all the information in a passage to decide what is most likely true.
Always choose the answer that is supported by the evidence—not by your personal opinion.
Praxis Reading Tips:
• Read the entire passage first.
• Look for keywords and context clues.
• Avoid making assumptions.
• Base every answer on evidence from the passage.
• Eliminate answers that are not supported by the text.
Practice Question
Passage:
The library stayed open two extra hours because many students were preparing for final exams.

A. The library will close permanently.
B. Students are studying for important tests. ✅
C. The library is empty every evening.

Day 7 Quick Tip:
Whenever you see an inference question, ask yourself:
"Which answer is best supported by the evidence in the passage?"
Using this strategy will help you answer inference questions more accurately on the Praxis Core Reading exam.
