Praxis Core Reading Day 3: Mastering Main Idea & Supporting Details

Welcome to Day 3 of the PraxisUSA 60-Day Praxis Core Course!

One of the most common question types on the Praxis Core Reading exam asks you to identify the main idea and distinguish it from supporting details. Learning this skill will help you answer reading questions more quickly and accurately.


What Is the Main Idea?

The main idea is the central message or the author's primary point. Every paragraph or passage is built around this key concept.

Tips for Finding the Main Idea

  • Read the title first.
  • Focus on the first and last sentences.
  • Ask yourself: "What is this passage mostly about?"
  • Ignore small details until you understand the overall message.

What Are Supporting Details?

Supporting details explain, prove, or give examples of the main idea. They include:

  • Facts
  • Examples
  • Statistics
  • Explanations
  • Descriptions

Example

Main Idea: Regular exercise improves overall health.

Supporting Details:

  • It strengthens the heart.
  • It improves mental health.
  • It increases energy levels.
  • It reduces the risk of chronic diseases.

Praxis Tip

If two answer choices seem correct, choose the one that summarizes the entire passage instead of focusing on a single detail.

बच्चों के पास स्कूल आने से पहले गणित से सम्बन्धित अनेक अनुभव पास होते हैं बच्चों के तमाम खेल ऐसे जिनमें वे सैंकड़े से लेकर हजार तक का हिसाब रखते हैं। वे अपने खेलों में चीजों का बराबर बँटवारा कर लेते हैं।  अपनी चीजों का हिसाब रखते हैं। छोटा-बड़ा, कम-ज्यादा, आगे-पीछे, उपर-नीचे, समूह बनाना, तुलना करना, गणना करना, मुद्रा की पहचान, दूरी का अनुमान, घटना-बढ़ना जैसी तमाम अवधारणाओं से बच्चे परिचित होते हैं।  हम बच्चों को प्रतीक ही सिखाते हैं। उनके अनुभवों को प्रतीकों से जोड़ना महत्वपूर्ण है। गणित मूर्त और अमूर्त से जुड़ने और जूझने का प्रयास है अवधारणाएँ अमूर्त होती हैं चाहे विषय कोई भी हो।  गणितीय अमूर्तता को मूर्त, ठोस चीजों की मदद से सरल बनाया जा सकता है। जब मूर्त को अमूर्त से जोड़ा जाता है तो अमूर्त का अर्थ स्पष्ट हो जाता है।  प्रस्तुतीकरण के तरीकों से भी कई बार गणित अमूर्त प्रतीत होने लगता है। शुरुआती दिनों में गणित सीखने में ठोस वस्तुओं की भूमिका अहम होती है इस उम्र में बच्चे स्वाभाविक तौर पर तरह-तरह की चीजों से खेलते हैं, उन्हें जमाते. बिगाड़ते और फिर से जमाते हैं।...
